US border agents have been placed on high alert following yesterday’s arrest in the Mexican town of Nuevo Laredo of a high-ranking member of the Cartel of the Northeast (Spanish abbr: CDN).
There are concerns of a spike in violence in Nuevo Laredo, in the western end of the volatile northeastern state of Tamaulipas, that could spill across the US border to Laredo and nearby cities.
The CDN figure arrested, Carlos Monsivais Trevino, known as “El Bola,” is believed to have been second in command of the cartel, one of the most vicious in Mexico. He hails from a long line of traffickers in the Trevino family.
He was said to be in charge of organizing kidnappings, extortions and drug and migrant trafficking.
Though based in Nuevo Laredo and other points in western Tamaulipas, CDN has expanded its reach to eastern portions of the state and into the neighboring states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila.
Its operatives also have shown up in central Mexico, including the state of Morelos.
Personnel in Nuevo Laredo and neighboring areas should buttress their security precautions and follow developments closely
Travel between Nuevo Laredo and other border cities should be undertaken on the US side of the border.
Overland travel is discouraged between Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo.
